Another American Holiday, Another Escape From America
To me, there’s nothing better than leaving the country on an American bank holiday. Taking advantage of those free days off to get away and see somewhere new. This year, I decided to head over the boarder to Quebec City, Canada.
I chose this destination because I could fit a whole experience into 3 days, as it’s only a 2 hour flight from NYC. The flight cost me about 5,000 credit card points and a couple hundred dollars, making it a (relatively) affordable destination for a last minute solo trip.
I was exited for this trip because I had heard it was like going to Europe, but in North America, and I can definitely see the similarities. As a historic walled city, Quebec City is like none other north of Mexico and the massive hills and cobblestone streets brought my back to another port city that I cherished visiting, Porto.
Despite the fact that none of my friends had ever heard of this destination, it was PACKED. So many tourists in the old city, cruises docked here for their day ashore, and even cab drivers told me that American tourists visit a LOT. I was a bit disappointed by the level of touristy-ness I felt there. I was hoping for something a little more charming and relaxed, but good to know this great town is getting its share of the tourism investment. They have incredible hotels, it’s easily walkable (as long as you don’t have mobility issues — the hills are rough), and once you get out of old town, there’s good food on every corner.
I 10000% recommend anyone visit Quebec City - I may come back for the winter canival to get even more charm out of this city.
